A group of at least three poachers, who entered the Sibuya Game Reserve on Monday morning to hunt rhinos, were devoured by lions. Their dismembered corpses were found the next morning.

Nick Fox, owner of the reserve, said they were armed with a rifle and an ax and "found themselves in the middle of a group of lions , a large group apparently, so they did not have a lot of time to react. " He said he did not know "exactly how much they were" because "there is not much left". Clothes "for three people" have however been found.

Their horns are very popular with followers of traditional Chinese or Vietnamese medicine, thousands of rhinoceros are slaughtered each year in Africa. There are only 5,000 black rhinoceros remaining on the continent, barely 2,000 in South Africa. The country is also home to 80% of the world's white rhinoceros population of about 20,000 specimens.
