For the regime of Bashar al-Assad, they were terrorists, for the international community they were heroes. Syrian white helmets, exactly 440, and their families were evacuated in the night and in the greatest secrecy, Monday, July 23. Identified and supported by Israeli soldiers, they were able to leave Syria via the Israeli border on the Golan Heights to reach Jordan.
This operation was initiated by Germany, the United Kingdom and of Canada as the Syrian regime tightens its grip on the remaining rebel-held areas. These white helmets are volunteer rescuers who have arrived in rebel areas in Syria to search the rubble and extract survivors, risking their lives to save the lives of others. These men and women volunteers are supported by several Western countries. Since 2013, 250 of them have been killed.
