(Lomé, July 30, 2018). The closing of the ECOWAS-ECCAS Joint Summit took place this afternoon. Among the major decisions taken by the heads of state, the institutionalization of the summit to be held every two years, alternatively, in one or other of the regions, and the commitment to strengthen cooperation to fight effectively against all forms of insecurity
At the end of their closed session, the heads of state completed the first joint ECOWAS-ECCAS summit on peace, security, radicalization and extremism violent, co-chaired by Presidents Faure Essozimna Gnbadingbé, President of the Togolese Republic and President in office of ECOWAS, and Ali Bongo Ondimba, President of the Gabonese Republic, and President-in-Office of ECCAS
Through the communiqué report at the close of the summit, the Heads of State highlighted the important achievements of the existing cooperation between ECOWAS and ECCAS, in the area of security and safety. particularly in the framework of the international coordination center. In order to better cope with the security challenges together, the Heads of State stressed the need for greater and more effective cooperation between the two communities. In this perspective, the heads of state and government have decided to have a shared vision of the threats and a common approach to the solutions to be made.
Thus, they adopted the Lomé Declaration on peace, security , stability and the fight against terrorism and violent extremism in the areas of ECOWAS and ECCAS. As part of the promotion of peace and stability, Heads of State pledge to cooperate to prevent conflicts, promote peace and stability in both regions.
In the name of security, they pledge to strengthen their co-operation in order to fight effectively against all forms of insecurity
In the name of the prevention and the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, the Heads of State condemn in the strongest possible terms attacks perpetrated by terrorist groups against civilian populations, defense and security forces and regional and international forces.
They commit to mutually reinforcing the capabilities of their defense and security forces in the field of staff training, joint exercises, intelligence and respect for the rules of human rights and international humanitarian law.
Heads of State have decided to meet every two years, and alternatively in one or the other of the two regions, to take stock of the implementation of the commitments contained in the Declaration adopted at the Joint Summit
. Joint Summit calls on Member States, the African Union, the United Nations, bilateral and multilateral partners and the international community to support the implementation of the decisions thus adopted.
The next Summit is scheduled for 2020 in Chad
