A small part of the library of former President François Mitterrand, bringing together more than a thousand books of literature of the twentieth century, is scattered at auction since yesterday and until tonight in Paris.

A total of 683 lots for an estimated value of 450,000 euros are auctioned by the Piasa auction house. This fund of modern works, in original edition for the most part, belonged, since the death of the former head of state, to the youngest son of François Mitterrand, Gilbert.

When reading the catalog of the auction house, there is confirmation of the former Socialist president's attraction to "right" writers. We find an original copy dating from 1937 of How time pbades Robert Brasillach (estimated between 5,000 and 8,000 euros) or the first edition of Hill inspired Maurice Barres (800-1 200 euros). In total, about fifteen works by Barrès are offered for sale. A second copy of the original edition of How time pbades de Brasillach is also auctioned off with a binding by Danielle Mitterrand (2,000-3,000 euros).

"François Mitterrand was a bibliophile. He liked copies on large papers and bindings. He was known for surveying bookstores and devouring booksellers' catalogs. He escaped the harsh political realities by his famous literary walks in the Latin Quarter. It was one of its most secret parts, the spiritual source of its action, "recalls the bookseller Jean-Baptiste de Proyart, expert of this sale. Among the most moving lots is the original (and very damaged) copy of Land of men Antoine de Saint-Exupery (4000-6000 euros). This copy is the one that the young Mitterrand had with him in captivity in 1940 and that he took in his pocket during his escape from his Stalag in Germany.
