SERIES – Sabrina, Hilda, Zelda and Salem are getting a new look. Forget the kind "Sabrina, the apprentice witch" broadcast for seven seasons riding the 1990s and 2000s, and make way for a much darker version from Friday, October 26.
With their first season of 10 episodes on Netflix, "The New Adventures of Sabrina" make a clean slate of the famous family sitcom and fill up with hemoglobin and fog to dive back into the story of this young witch stuck between her magical life and his deadly entourage.
Many English-speaking media greet the more terrifying spirit of this reboot (trailer below) and some – like Melissa Joan Heart who was the first to lend her features to Sabrina – even go so far as to see in this mix of magic formulas, family problems and battles against demons a parallel with an icon like: Buffy Summers.
Is the new Sabrina Spellman really at the level of the vicious Sunnydale vampire slayer? TheHuffPost, who was able to watch the first eight episodes of this series created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa ("Riverdale"), reviews some essential aspects that should be gathered to claim such an honor.
"Buffy the vampires" had hit hard by making his television debut in 1997 thanks to a main character that was then quite rare to see on the screen: a young woman strong physically and psychologically, deeply independent but also terribly human with its typical problems of high school. As strong as this character was, he would never have had the impact we know him without the friends who had been badigned to him. The "Scooby Gang", of which Willow, Alex and Giles have remained the indestructible heart for seven seasons, has greatly contributed to the popularity of the show through the links and themes it has explored.
The new Sabrina clearly wants to take this model back. The series begins when the young witch is confronted with an insurmountable choice: to remain mortal and to continue her life surrounded by her group of friends to whom she holds more than anything, or to draw a line on all this environment to become a witch as her destiny. Sabrina Spellman of Netflix has values that she shares loudly and loudly, leaving no one to make decisions for her – not even Satan- and knows how to defend herself.
The account is good on this point. Her aunts Hilda and Zelda, her cousin Ambrose and her school of magic are also promising. As for his deadly entourage, however, it will be necessary to return. Roz and Susie are rather nice and bring a bit thick, but nothing that really makes the weight with the series of Joss Whedon. Not to mention the love affair Sabrina / Harvey which, for the moment, does not reach the ankle – and even the toe – of the duo Buffy / Angel.
Netflix / Century Fox Team Sabrina v. Team Buffy
Buffy's high school years were built so that the demons and other forces of evil that give the heroine the impression of having the weight of the world on her shoulders are a metaphor on the throes of adolescence. We can not decently expect the "New Adventures of Sabrina" the same thing, the novelty around the first concept has long since gone. Still, the series could have sought to really go beyond the dilemma between mortal life and magical life. The season 2, already shot, will perhaps stick to this-said, the series currently has only 10 episodes.
The bet is in any case held on the demonic aspect that adopts the series. Without being a fiction of horror, Sabrina offers a lot of pbadages that startle and tend the viewer by their suspense. Aided by a dark photograph with sharp contrasts and blurred angles, the series goes even further than Buffy could offer in terms of black ambience in general.
By sticking to this -visual and narrative – resolutely maleficent aspect, "Sabrina" however misses what has made one of Buffy's greatest strengths: her humor. The series of Joss Whedon has always found the right words to make certain dialogues nuggets become cults for the fans. Buffy would not be Buffy without her insolent repartee or those crazy moments that constantly relax the atmosphere, even in the worst situations.
A clever mix that has given rise to episodes that are now among the strongest of all television ("Innocence", "Hush", "The Body", "Once More, With Feelings", "Seeing Red". ..) and which, coupled with the "New Adventures of Sabrina", shows that it is far from being out of date despite its two decades more. And that especially reveals that the idea of comparing a monument of the kind of seven seasons to a novelty of 10 episodes was perhaps a bit hasty even if – without expecting as much – the Netflix series clearly deserves to be given a chance .
