ATLANTA – Thanks to a skillful and selfless swing from Freddie Freeman, the Braves once again showed the increased length of their roster and tied a four-game winning streak with an 8-4 win over the Nationals on Friday night at Truist Park.
After a point with two outs and one in the fifth, Freeman made no attempt to play the home run hero. The reigning NHL MVP instead took advantage of the hole on the left side of the infield and beat the change by throwing a single ball to the ground from the opposite field. It was the first of four straight hits the Braves have recorded against Erick Fedde in a three-point frame.
After Atlanta scored six points with two strikeouts in Thursday night’s win in St. Louis, manager Brian Snitker said he felt his team had regained their late-inning mojo. A second consecutive and decisive rally should further invigorate the new-look Braves, who have won five of six since adding last week’s Trade Deadline acquisitions to their roster.
When Freeman came home with bases loaded and an out in the eighth, he showed his ability to hit all fields with a two-run single to right field. The 31-year-old first baseman was hitting .224 with a .784 OPS on June 10. He entered Friday’s contest after hitting .366 with a 1.022 OPS in the next 50 games.
