CLEVELAND, Ohio – More than 17,000 Ohio residents have registered today, the first day of registration for the COVID-19 Mass Vaccination Site at the Wolstein Center at Cleveland State University, Governor Mike said DeWine during his press briefing on Thursday.
“We’ve already made a good start,” DeWine said.
Vaccinations will begin on Wednesday. The Wolstein Center site will be able to administer up to 6,000 vaccines per day, seven days a week, for eight weeks.
Eligible Ohio residents can visit the state’s new COVID-19 vaccine website to register for vaccines at the Wolstein Center and other locations.
The age of eligibility for the COVID-19 vaccine dropped on Thursday for people 50 and older, people with type 2 diabetes and end-stage kidney disease.
Mass vaccination sites and the state’s new central registration portal are trying to streamline the process of finding vaccination appointments.
The deployment has been criticized for being frustrating and time consuming. Seniors and those without internet access relied on family members or friends, who spent days trying to set dates.
There were plenty of appointments up for grabs at the Wolsten Center on Thursday and the website seemed to be working fine.
Thursday morning, the first date available at Wolstein Center was Saturday March 20 and seven appointments were free. There were 19 slots available for Sunday March 21.
Thursday afternoon, 17 appointments were available for Monday March 22 and 24 slots were open on Tuesday March 23.
It appears the portal only opens two days at a time for shots at Wolstein’s site; when these two days are fulfilled, two other dates are available. Only two dates are available at a time. For example, the appointment dates at the end of March and April were not accessible on Thursday.
“This mass vaccination is a joint partnership with many organizations, including FEMA. As such, we are working closely with FEMA on how and when to open dates, ”DeWine spokeswoman Alicia Shoults said in an email. “More appointments will be added in the coming days and residents of Ohio are encouraged to continue to check the website.
The state’s new vaccine clearinghouse also displays appointment times available from some vendors, but directs users to vendor websites for other locations such as Walgreen’s, Giant Eagle, and Marc’s.
Further vaccine appointments at Wolstein and other vendors will be available on the state’s new portal in the coming days, DeWine said.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency sends officials to Cleveland to assist state and local vendors in operations at the Wolstein Center.
