FREMONT – A man described by police as a “well-known prolific offender” was arrested Thursday morning on suspicion of kidnapping a woman he apparently knew as well as some pending warrants, authorities said.
The woman was found unharmed. Police have yet to say what her relationship is to the suspect, a 35-year-old man from Fremont.
Police said the man is believed to have violently pulled the woman into his vehicle around 5:10 p.m. Wednesday in Block 300 of Mowry Avenue near Mission Boulevard.
Witnesses confronted the suspect, but he left with the woman. Witnesses told police the two appeared to know each other.
Patrol officers responded and began to search for the suspect vehicle. Detectives also responded, taking charge of the investigation and were able to identify the suspect who they said was the subject of numerous arrests for possession of firearms, escape offense, resisting arrest and drug possession. He has also previously been arrested for attempted homicide with a firearm and is currently on probation for criminal escape, police said.
The detectives searched for him all night.
At around 12:15 a.m. Thursday, detectives located the suspect vehicle and launched a pursuit. A San Jose Police Department helicopter responded and provided aerial cover during the chase. Patrol officers were able to perform a PIT maneuver of the suspect vehicle near Sundale Drive and Fremont Boulevard, where the suspect was arrested after a short standoff, police said.
No community member, agent or suspect was injured in this incident.
The woman was not with him, but about an hour later she was located, unharmed, by detectives. Police did not say where she was.
The suspect was held in Santa Rita prison on suspicion of kidnapping, domestic violence, forcible confinement and escape.
Police said he also had another warrant for the felony of escape at the time of his arrest.
Police said the suspect was also under investigation for an Aug. 15 case where he is suspected of having fled a police check by a patrol officer, in which police said he had thrown a replica firearm while driving a vehicle with stolen license plates.
The suspect is being held without bail and is expected to be brought to justice on October 4.
