FRIDAY GAMES

Ayala (6-0) vs. Glendora (6-0) at Citrus College, 7 p.m .: It doesn’t get much better than two undefeated teams meeting so late in the season, especially those who have looked dominant. Braydon Brus and Zach Ford were a handful in the backfield for the Tartans, averaging 120 yards between them, with stable QB Jake Denerson. But the strength of the Tartans is their defense. They allowed only 9.1 points per game and no more than 14 points in a game. That will be challenged by Ayala, who has a dynamic sophomore quarterback to Bryan Wilson, who threw for almost 1,000 yards with 11 touchdowns. Ayala has beaten Chino Hills, Diamond Ranch and La Habra, but it’s the toughest test for both. At home, expect the Tartan defense to win.

The choice: Glendora

Monrovia (5-0) at La Canada (4-1), 7 p.m .: The Rio Hondo League title is likely decided in the opening game between these two. The Wildcats have answered every non-league challenge and have had solid wins over West Covina, Los Altos and San Dimas. The Spartans’ only loss came to the still undefeated Campbell Hall 27-23, a game in which the Spartans had a big lead before letting it slip away. The Wildcats have a flash with quarterback Noah Rodriguez, who threw more than 1,400 yards to lead the region. Receiver Carlos Hernandez has 12 TD receptions. Sophomore QB Macky Plocher was also strong, passing over 1,000 yards, making it possible for a shootout between the teams. But in the end, the Wildcats are probably too talented overall.

The choice: Monrovia

Notre Dame (1-4) at Bishop Amat (3-2), 7 p.m .: The Lancers were on the ground after being knocked down by St. John Bosco and Servite, but they regained their confidence as they whipped Damien 53-28 last week in a highly anticipated showdown in the zone. They moved up to 11th overall in the southern section of Calpreps. They open the Mission League game with the two weaker opponents on paper, starting with Notre Dame and followed by Cathedral next week. If they avoid a disappointment, they should be able to win the next two weeks to prepare for the big game streak to end the regular season.

The choice: Bishop Amat

Etiwanda (5-0) at Damien (2-3), 7 p.m .: The Spartans can’t spend time feeling sorry for themselves following last week’s loss to Bishop Amat, as the undefeated Etiwanda is as tough as he gets in the Base League. Damien has played non-league games against Loyola, St. Francis, Orange Lutheran, Oaks Christian and Amat to prepare for the challenges of the Base League. Etiwanda is solid, but he hasn’t beaten an opponent with a winning record. Expect the Spartans to bounce back and get a big win. They are not the Spartans of the past. They showed it in the spring and they are ready to show it again.

The choice: Damien

California (4-2) at El Rancho (6-0), 7 p.m .: With Serna appearing to be the Del Rio League favorites, Cal and El Rancho are the top two, so this league opener is hugely important to both of them. The Dons have been a little better this season, averaging 36 points and not being tested at all. Will this test come against El Rancho? It is certainly possible. The Condors have played a pretty tough schedule, can run the ball and cause problems. But at home, it’s hard to imagine El Rancho sliding down there after playing well.

The choice: El Rancho

La Habra (0-5) vs. Sunny Hills (3-2) at Buena Park HS, 7pm: No team wants to forget the non-league part of their calendar more than La Habra, who has yet to win a game, despite performing well in a 31-21 loss to unbeaten Ayala last week. If the term “flipping a switch” applies to anyone, it’s the Highlanders, who are hoping to bounce back and play for the Freeway League title. It starts with a win in their first league game. Sunny Hills played well, but didn’t keep up with La Habra’s level of competition, so expect the Highlanders to finally celebrate and start 1-0 in the league.

The choice: La Habra

Ganesha (2-3, 1-0) at Bassett, (2-3, 1-0), 7 p.m .: The four-team Miramonte League is launched and operates with a six-game schedule, with each team competing twice in the league. Ganesha and Bassett both started with narrow league wins last week. It could be a barnburner league race with all four teams able to fight. It has been a long time since the Olympians fought for a league title and he can’t afford to miss the opportunity at home.

The choice: Bassett

Northview (2-4) at Bonita (5-1), 7 p.m .: The Bearcats’ final tune-up before the brutal Mountain West League begins should be another victory. The struggling Vikings will struggle to find another win the rest of the season. The Bearcats are just too polite, offensively and defensively.

St. Paul (5-0) at St. Margaret’s (2-3), 7 p.m .: The Swordsmen win by a surprisingly easy 30-point margin and have their final out-of-league tune-up before a two-week break and their first Angelus League game against St. Francis. St. Margaret’s lost two games by a total of five points and the other was a 10-point loss to La Mirada. It should be competitive, but the Swordsmen should move towards the league 6-0.
