Everyone has driven, been driven, ridden, or walked the Noyo River Bridge, but most of us don’t think about what’s beneath our feet as we pass. There is a lot to see and do in North Harbor, but if you want to see it all you have to go exploring. If you love to read, there is a good reason to drive to the end of the road.
The Friends of the Library run a small hallway of a second hand book store, open 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, just to the left of the Princess Seafood Restaurant (not the market / grocery store). Parking is reserved for restaurant customers, but you can park at the foot of the cliff and at the end of the road, where people go to enjoy the mouth of the river.
The bookstore has more than books; it contains magazines, vinyl records, CDs and DVDs (including boxes). There is a view from the dock down to the river, and you can check out the mermaid mailbox, the unique awning (also with a marine theme), and the interesting posters (whales, maps). Everything, including the use of the boutique space, has been donated, and the stock is grouped by medium and category (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, youth, etc.). On the first Saturday of each month, the Friends accept donations of material in the alley to the left and behind the Fort. Bragg Library (499 E. Laurel, in Whipple) 9:00 a.m. to noon. (The library itself does not currently accept donations.) In addition to running the used book store, The Friends has sales every few months.
Most locals don’t know this store (!?), And tourists run into it. The prices are fantastic: $ 3 for hard covers, $ 2 for soft covers, $ 1 for small paperbacks and magazines. Some of their offerings were written by local authors; some are published very recently. The Friends have a core of employee volunteers but would like to have more. To volunteer (shifts are two hours long), please email The Friends at [email protected].
