Fujifilm announces GFX100 IR, a scientific-focused infrared camera

Fujifilm has announced a unique and specialized version of the GFX100 camera. Still insisting on calling it a “large format” camera, this latest version can take infrared images at 100 or 400 megapixels thanks to the new pixel shift feature.

Fujifilm says that images taken with the GFX100 IR allow you to see details in images that are not visible to the naked eye. For example, according to the company, “this can be important in helping to identify forged documents.” Additionally, it can be useful for those working in culture preservation as the infrared spectrum can be used to analyze pigments in historical artifacts or works of art.

Fujifilm’s latest firmware update allows Pixel Shift Multi-Shot to be used, which is especially useful for archival and forensic work, as the company bills this camera as suited. It is compatible with Capture One meaning that images can be taken in tethered mode and from the same viewing angle, repeatedly.

Here are a few examples of what a normal image would reveal, followed by what can be seen in an infrared shot:

Different IR filters can be used in front of the lens to create images at different wavelengths which in turn reveal different details. Using the correct IR cut filter will allow the GFX100 IR to be used normally – that is, in the same way as the standard GFX100 digital camera – on traditional color images in the visible spectrum.

The GFX100 IR will not be made available to the general public or for personal use, but only available through specific Fujifilm authorized resellers for use in forensic, scientific and cultural preservation applications.

“Sales of the GFX100 IR will be subject to a GFX100 IR User Agreement, which sets out specific terms of use for the camera,” Fujifilm said in a press release.

The GFX100 IR is currently expected to be available in Q1 2021. No pricing was given as part of the announcement.
