Fully vaccinated Miami-Dade residents infected with COVID-19

MIAMI – A Miami-Dade County commissioner remained hospitalized on Tuesday after reporting symptoms of COVID. It is still unclear whether he fell victim to the new, more contagious Delta variant, the dominant strain in the United States.

Jose “Pepe” Diaz, chairman of the committee, and Isidoro Lopez, his chief of staff, tested positive. Diaz checked in at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Diaz and Lopez have both been vaccinated against COVID-19. They were working alongside Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, search teams and other leaders at the site of the Surfside building collapse.

Dr Aileen Marty, an infectious disease expert at Florida International University, said those who are vaccinated should remain cautious. She said COVID-19 vaccines are effective, but some people, although fully vaccinated, will still get sick.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention calls them breakthrough vaccine cases and the agency is working with state and local health departments to identify trends.

As of July 6, the CDC had received reports of 5,186 patients with breakthrough infections from the COVID-19 vaccine. According to the CDC, 4,909 have been hospitalized and 988 have died.

Marty said that shouldn’t deter anyone from getting the COVID vaccine because it still protects against hospitalization.

“The vaccine is a way to prepare your body in advance,” said Marty, comparing it to preparations for hurricane season.

Miami-Dade County resident Erin Michelle Newberg said she received the Pfizer vaccine months ago and was diagnosed with COVID last week. Israeli researchers have found that the Pfizer vaccine is less effective against Delta infections.

“So many of you have expressed that your friends who are vaxed are sick,” Newberg wrote on Instagram. “Yeah. This vax supposedly alleviates symptoms. Wrong. Not for me at least.
