The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Wednesday that those who are fully vaccinated against the coronavirus and “meet the criteria” will no longer be required to quarantine after being exposed to someone with COVID-19. The CDC said the update applies to fully vaccinated people who received the last dose within the previous three months and have remained asymptomatic since exposure to COVID-19.
“People who do not meet the three criteria above should continue to follow current quarantine guidelines after exposure to a person suspected or confirmed of COVID-19,” the agency said while noting that if the risk of Transmission by vaccinated people remains unclear, vaccines have been shown to prevent symptomatic COVID-19.
“In addition, the individual and societal benefits of avoiding unnecessary quarantine may outweigh the potential but unknown risk of transmission, and make it easier to direct public health resources to those most at risk of transmitting SARS-CoV. -2 to others, ”the CDC said.

The agency said fully vaccinated people who are not quarantined should still monitor for symptoms for 14 days after exposure and those who develop symptoms should still be evaluated and tested. It also recommends that fully vaccinated people continue to adhere to public health measures.

Further down in the update, the agency noted that vaccinated hospitalized patients or those residing in healthcare facilities should always be quarantined after exposure due to a higher risk of serious illness and deaths among this population.

“While not preferred, healthcare facilities might consider waiving quarantine for vaccinated patients and residents as a strategy to mitigate critical issues when other options fail or are not available,” said the ‘agency.

The update was released the same day the CDC released additional mask guidance, which included data on wearing two masks rather than one. Specifically, the agency found that wearing a fabric mask in addition to a surgical or medical mask was up to 95% effective in preventing aerosol transmission in a simulated lab experiment.
