For years, Android has supported the useful ability to install system updates in the background, requiring only a quick reboot for changes to take effect. With monthly updates becoming the norm, it’s a big improvement in the quality of life. Samsung has delayed this feature for years, however, and that doesn’t change as the Galaxy S21 series still doesn’t support seamless updates.
Transparent updates use A / B partitions to install an update in the background while you are still using your phone. This has many benefits, such as lower risk of data corruption during an update, but also the simple fact that your phone is not out of service for a good chunk of 20 minutes.
It was widely assumed that Google would require assistance for this update method with Android 11 as some leaked documents seem to have proven, but apparently Google returned on this decision in time since.
That is, Samsung’s Galaxy S21, S21 +, and S21 Ultra still do not support the five-year-old seamless update feature. Samsung enemy Max Weinbach noted on Twitter that it didn’t find any mention of A / B updates in a system image of a Galaxy S21 device. Looking at two apps, Treble Info and Treble Check, the story is the same there, transparent updates are marked as lacking support. These results should be taken with a grain of salt, however, as the app also reports that Treble is not supported, which has not been true for any mainstream Android device for years according to Google’s demands. . Probably these apps only report erroneously on these devices or it could be something with the current software version from Samsung. In any case, there is little chance that these phones will not support Treble.
Why does Samsung not support this feature? The company didn’t officially mention anything, although we did ask for a statement, but in the past the rationale was storage. A / B updates come at the expense of some of the built-in storage, around 3GB or so. In a year where the microSD card slot has been stripped down, I guess that’s not the worst excuse.
