The final of the Game of Thrones series – Season 8, Episode 6 – will take place this Sunday, May 19th. HBO does not reveal much about what to expect, with both the trailer and the photos from Episode 6, revealing virtually nothing you would ever have expected. But will the main character Daenerys finally meet his end in the last episode of the series? Read on for a possibility that was right in front of our faces in episode 5, but that went largely unnoticed by many viewers.
With Daenerys Targaryen completely gone Mad Queen in Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 5, "The Bells", the question that arises to everyone is simple: who can stop the dragon queen in the last episode of the series?
Will Arya kill Dany, thus completing the last part of Melisandre's prediction "brown eyes, green eyes, blue eyes"? (Dany should have purple eyes, according to the books, but the eyes of actress Emilia Clarke are really green.) Will Jon kill Dany for his crimes during the fall of King & # Landing and assume its legitimate role as king? Or, will something more surprising happen, with a twist involving Varys and his little birds, which seems extremely likely in light of some quiet scenes from the beginning of episode 5?
Here's what everyone missed while we were engrossed in the execution of Varys, the slaughter of the little people by Dany and Cleganebowl (the hype was real): Varys and his young spy Martha were actively trying to get the job done. to poison Dany before putting an end to his maneuvers.
In the opening scene of the episode, Varys very clearly wrote letters explaining the true identity of Jon Snow, probably to send them to everyone in Westeros in order to justify the fact that Jon's seize the throne. Even though he always does it later in the episode when Gray Worm picks him up, it's unclear whether he actually sent crows – he's done it that happened off screen. My money is on yes, but that's beside the question, for the moment.
When one of Varys' "little birds", "Martha" enters the room, they exchange a brief exchange in which Martha tells Varys that she "will not eat" ("she" being presumably Dany), and Varys answer that they will do it "try again at supper." Martha believes that Dany's soldiers are watching her and Varys is trying to reassure the girl by reminding her that big risks are being rewarded. At the end of the scene, Varys returns Martha to the kitchen, where she apparently works.
"The greater the risk, the greater the reward." What risk is greater than trying to poison Queen Targaryen?
It's a very Varys-like movement; Whispermaster always plots, and frankly, his bow this season seemed unusually mute. His plan was to approach Jon and Tyrion directly, and if they did not, he would die? This is not the spider we knew. But openly defying the queen – a classic, so risky, imprecise – while he secretly plots to poison him from the shadows? Now it's more appropriate.
That's not all, though – there's another scene that hints at the poison plot, and might even give us a clue about how Dany will end up in the final.
When Varys hears Gray Worm and Unsullied parade down the hallway toward his room, he burns the letter that he was writing – and removes his rings. The camera stays very close together as he twists one briefly, pulls it and drops it into an empty chalice on his desk. The rest follows soon.
It could be anything, or everything: when Olenna Tyrell poisoned Joffrey at his wedding, she picked the poison – rightly called "the strangler" – in Sansa's collar, which had been given to him by the mad Dontos to Littlefinger on order, and dropped the false crystal into Joffrey's cup, where it probably dissolved and became undetectable.
Zooming on the rings of Varys and brightening the image does not reveal remarkable blue crystals. In fact, the ring we see best seems to have represented Varys' loyalty to Queen Targaryen – it seems to be acting from this official partnership ring between the Mey jewelry retailer and the show. The retailer calls this a "ring of allegiance" and their website says that Varys, Tyrion, Jorah and Gray Worm have all worn one since season 7. It was designed to look like a dragon's thorn. By removing it, Varys symbolically loses the symbol of his loyalty to Daenerys.
But Varys remains loyal to Jon, who, he knows now, is also a Targaryen. Even though we did not see the obvious poisoned blue crystal when Varys pulled out all his rings, the series seemed to be focusing on their removal just long enough for this to be important for the final. After all, Martha, the back maid, could still hide, and the death of her master at Dany's hands might prompt her to continue trying to fulfill her last wish: see the death of the Queen of the dragon, whatever the method used.
Just in case, I'll be paying attention to any sign of Martha in the Game of Thrones Season 8 finale.
