Garland’s letter also stated that Texas did not have the power to interfere with the “broad and unquestionable power of the federal government on the subject of immigration.” The governor of Texas, a potential 2024 Republican presidential candidate, has clashed with the US government on immigration issues, repeatedly berating the Biden administration’s border policies and recently claiming that the state would build a border wall itself.
In the letter, Garland said that if Abbott does not immediately rescind the order, the United States “intends to pursue all appropriate legal remedies to ensure that Texas does not interfere with the functions of the federal government”.
Among Garland’s stated concerns was that the order would endanger the health and safety of non-citizens detained in the United States, contribute to overcrowding at border facilities, and interfere with with the implementation of the federal immigration policy.
