Gary Joe ‘Chappy’ Chaplin | Obituary

WINTER HAVEN, Fla .– Gary Joe Chaplin, 80, of Winter Haven, Fla., Passed away on Tuesday, September 7, 2021, surrounded by his family.

Gary was born January 12, 1941 in Tuscola, son of Everett Roy and Berniece Chaplin. They died before him.

He is survived by his 27 year life partner, Ginny Berry of Flint, Michigan; son Theron Chaplin of Windsor, Canada; daughter Chandra (Todd) Simmons of Grayson, GA; her granddaughter Alexandra Simmons of East Lansing Michigan; sisters Phyllis Jean Brothers of Tilton and Carol Ann Chambers of Bloomington; brothers Roy Dean (Judy) Chaplin of Normal and Roger Lee (Sue) Chaplin of Sims, North Carolina; and 13 nieces and nephews.

Other special people in Gary’s life were former wife Juanita Chaplin Hunter of Lansing, Michigan; Uncle Paul C. Moore of Champaign; Uncle Kenneth Moore of Tuscola; and friend Bill Cecilian of Vero Beach, Florida.

Gary graduated from Tuscola High, where he practiced football, basketball and track and field. He joined the Air Force from 1961 to 1965, where he traveled to Tripoli, Libya, and trained as an aircraft electrician. This is how his work and his love of travel began.

He worked for AT&T in Detroit for 39 years, where he became District Manager. After his retirement, he worked for communications at Lucent in London, Saudi Arabia, the Netherlands and France.

Family was the most important, and he was happy that his children had graduated from the State of Michigan and that his granddaughter was now in her sophomore year. He looked forward to our annual Chaplin meetings.

He loved life and enjoyed it with Ginny. His hobbies were golf, karaoke and cooking.
