ATLANTA (FOX 5 Atlanta) – A prized show dog is back with his owner magnet Tuesday after a wild adventure at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
Gale, an American Staffordshire Terrier, was reported missing Saturday after being recorded for a flight near the international terminal. Officials said Gale was out of his crate and had run to the airfield.
The airport used two of its experts. Steven Boyd and Jeff Miller are wildlife biologists at airports. They are usually tasked with preventing wildlife from staying on the trail and on the property, but they quickly change gear to help the domesticated puppy.
An intense search of the 4,700-acre property began almost immediately, but their first major break came on Sunday, when Gale was spotted in a part of the airport known as the Rock Quarry. Boyd and Miller spent the whole day Monday looking late in the evening, even during a hail storm, looking for the missing dog.
"We did some serious research throughout the airport, but we knew she was heading to the rock quarry," Miller said.
On Monday morning, Gale was again sighted in the same area of the airport.
"We focused most of our research there because we knew it would not come out," Miller said.
"We had the impression that she was there to cover herself and for the water," Boyd said, adding that the area is also under the line of flight, which makes her a little quieter than the rest of the property.
"It's a stormwater runoff, so with the rain last night, there could have been a low water level that could have been dangerous for her", said Miller.
But fortunately, Gale remained on the perimeter, hiding a few shrubs during heavy rains and hail on Monday night.
Tuesday morning, they tried a different tactic. They brought the owner of Gale to the rock quarry to try to attract him. He went down to the rocky area and began to call him. It took about 20 minutes for the show dog to be forced to leave his hiding place, but when she did, it was pure joy.

Boyd and Miller are a jack of all traders at the airport in their efforts to ensure the safety of wildlife and air travel. They repair fences, trap animals and even use fireworks to disperse animals, but this week they can add dog marks to their list.
