Georgia apartment rocked by ‘explosion’, four injured

An explosion erupted at an apartment complex in a northern suburb of Atlanta Sunday afternoon, injuring four people – including one badly burned, according to local reports and police.

Dunwoody Police Department said it received several calls just before 1:30 p.m. regarding an explosion at the Arrive Perimeter apartment complex off Asbury Square.

Officer Robert Parsons told Fox News some people were trapped inside the building and others – including one with “severe burns” – were taken to hospital. Parsons said officers entered the building and detected a “strong smell of gas.”

Two people are missing but have since been located, FOX 5 reported. At 6 p.m., all residents were counted, according to the station.

A helicopter and drone flew over the three-story structure as the local Red Cross began soliciting residents to see who might need help finding accommodation. The building and several others nearby were evacuated. Residents were told Monday was the first day they could return home.

Several law enforcement and fire departments are on hand to help with the rescue effort. The surrounding streets have been closed. Police have asked anyone not affected by the blast to stay at home during the rescue operation.

Atlanta Gas Light said crews were on hand to assist emergency responders. He said natural gas was switch off at the locations directly affected by the incident and there were no further service disruptions.

Eboni Thornton said WSB-TV that she was in a moving truck outside the building when she felt something had fallen on the vehicle.

“The rental office collapsed on the left side, the double doors were blown out and I could hear a lady scream with her head held high,” Thornton said.

Thornton said he saw two people limping and bleeding and being carried out of the rubble.

The official cause of the explosion is under investigation.

Dunwoody is approximately 20 miles north of Atlanta.
