Germany tests its first "electric highway" for trucks

The very first eHighway launched in Sweden in 2016. The concept is the same: the trucks use pantographs (the peaks on their roof) to hang overhead cables and pull electricity. Trucks can supply electricity to the grid when they are braking, which makes the system particularly useful in the event of a blockage.

The system will not have any major impact for a moment. Every day, only five trucks will travel the electrified section. About 10% of the 135,000 daily vehicles on the road are heavy trucks. This reduction in emissions, however, could increase as more trucks support the system and encourage trucking companies to opt for electricity, knowing that their freight carriers could drive longer with a load.
