At the 62nd Leipzig Documentary and Animated Film Festival (Dok.Leipzig), the main prize of the German competition was awarded this year to Pablo Ben Yakov for the controversial film "The Lord of Toys".
The documentary describes a group of YouTubers from Dresden who openly speak racist, badist and anti-Semitic. Already, the presentation of the film had prompted the festival to comment: "Lord of the Toys" is accused of badertion against the depicted persons.
Festival director Leena Pasanen commented on the allegations in a press release: "We do not share the affirmative attitude of this film, and thanks to its precise observations and critical ranking, it exposes a culture of youth and its scary language, "she said.
The action of the left-wing coalition "Leipzig takes place" criticized the film, claiming that "among the actors of the right-wing scene are shown without reflection" and called for protest. Finally, the screening of the film on Wednesday night was silent at the cinema, reported the "Leipziger Volkszeitung" ("LVZ").
However, a woman in the audience had asked why a film was shot in which racist, badist and anti-Semitic slogans were heard, the "LVZ" continued. "Due to the tight schedule", no more detailed discussion could take place, said Dok.Leipzig. But other discussions are planned with the filmmakers.
The award ceremony justified the Dok.Leipzig by the fact that the film is "intelligent, differentiated, extremely courageous and a painful political explosiveness". Last year already, the festival had to be justified for the emission of the film "Mondays in Dresden" of Pegida.
