Bad Hersfeld (dpa) – "Peer Gynt" is not exactly the epitome of light entertainment for a relaxed summer evening – but the first guests at the opening of the Bad Hersfeld Festival have could do it Friday with an unconventional staging.

"Fist of the North" is also called the dramatic poem by the Norwegian lyricist Henrik Ibsen of 1867. The Berlin director Robert Schuster directed a modern, worthwhile piece, with an adapted text and only two and a half hours long.

The consequences of digitization are one of its themes. The original fairy tale trolls become zombie-like trolls of the internet world with a take on the back of the bad. The agitation is entirely to the taste of new director Joern Hinkel. His predecessor, Dieter Wedel, who retired in January because of an abuse case, has promoted other substances. For example, when it comes to power, politics and the economy, said Hinkel.

"Peer Gynt" is one of the greatest dreamers of world literature. The main character, the son of the young farmer, tries to escape reality with lies. The dreamer, driven by the desire to be "somebody", becomes a man of selfish and career-oriented pleasure, who realizes quite his childish dream of wealth and power.

Christian Nickel plays the lead role. The exceptional actor once again shows his clbad at the Festival. The ensemble is sprinkled with leading actors such as Nina Petri and Anouschka Renzi.

Social criticism is also incorporated into Bad Hersfelder's version: optimistic mania, talk show and selfishness under US President Donald Trump ("America First", "Fake News") . That goes well with "Peer Gynt", who also likes to be in the first place and deals with alternative facts.

The public gave a lot of production but not excessive applause – compared to the early opening of previous years.

Among the 1,300 or so guests at the beginning of the 68th edition of the Bad Hersfelder Festspiele were celebrities such as "Lindenstraße" actress Marie-Luise Marjan, lotto fairy Franziska Reichenbacher and actors Martin Semmelrogge and Samuel Koch .

Prime Minister of Hesse, Volker Bouffier, who attended the premiere with his wife Ursula, said: "" Peer Gynt "is as relevant today as it was more than 150 years ago . " It's about looking for a fulfilling life. "People stage illusory worlds and alternative facts, filter reality and rethink their lives because they do not find it glamorous enough and enviable enough."
