South African director Neill Blomkamp will present a sequel to "RoboCop". This brings back the "delay" of the service of the American subsidiary. The new movie is called "RoboCop Returns". Who plays the main role and when the film will be released is not yet known.

Blomkamp seems to be the perfect choice for the material. He previously directed sci-fi movies "District 9", "Elysium" and "Chappie". In each of them, he combined creative trickery techniques with socially critical and philosophically tinted stories. Blomkamp has often referred to the original "RoboCop" of 1987 as a source of inspiration in interviews. This was particularly clear in "Chappie", this film also revolves around a robot that a scientist uses to implant artificial intelligence.

Back to the original

"RoboCop Returns" is produced by Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner, the writers of the first film. The scenario is therefore based on a story of the two that they had written in the eighties for a continuation originally planned. He is currently reworked by Justin Rhodes, who also wrote the script for the restart of "Terminator".

The "RoboCop" version of Blomkamp returns close to the original in which Peter Weller played the lead role. The film criticized the power of societies and the growing materialism of the Reagan era. Topics that Blomkamp wants to join by the deadline. In addition, the director is interested in the subject of identity.

For genre fans, the project is likely to inspire enthusiasm, but this is not at all an autodidact. This is demonstrated by the fluctuating success of the "RoboCop" continuations and the restarts that followed the original. The suites shot in 1990 and 1993 are largely forgotten today, the various TV series as well, and the 2014 remake met with mixed reactions.

Productions for the Chinese market

In the United States, this version of "Robocop" was a real flop, but in China, it was so well received that the film grossed $ 240 million worldwide. Behind the plans for the current remake of MGM production studio also put the calculation, especially to produce a hit for the Chinese market.

With this, Hollywood studios continue to emphasize the reuse of already introduced brands – and thus figures and stories from a still largely white and male cinema era. If it can still work in times that tell stories of more varied heroes with blockbusters such as "Black Panther" and "Wonder Woman", will have to show.
