Logan Webb entered the 2021 season with 94 indiscriminate innings in the major leagues under his belt: a 5.36 ERA in 21 games staged in 2019 and 2020. Bigger things were expected from the 24-year-old who had worked to master the interwoven art of sinkers and sliders, but it’s unlikely anyone saw it coming on Saturday night.
After proving himself to be the most reliable starting pitcher on MLB’s top team, Webb took the mound as the San Francisco Giants watched a monster NLDS clash against rival Los Angeles Dodgers – which finished a only game behind them in the West of the NL.
Facing playoff-tested ace Walker Buehler, Webb made the night his own – stifling the Dodgers for 7 2/3 innings, striking out 10 and scoring 11 strikeouts. In the end, he was the hero as the Giants took a crucial 1-0 lead in the series with a 4-0 victory.
Economical with his throws, Webb has worked deep into the game, evoking Madison Bumgarner’s legendary beginnings and adding her name to all kinds of historical lists.
Pushed by an invigorated Oracle Park crowd, he took his turn at bat even in the seventh inning. Giants manager Gabe Kepler only retired his young starter after a single from the Mookie Betts posed a threat with the Los Angeles roster.
The bullpen took care of that threat and got the W for Webb. Buster Posey, Kris Bryant and Brandon Crawford all scored in support.
Next, the Giants will send Kevin Gausman to the mound against 20-game winner Julio Urías in Game 2 on Saturday night.
