Kent County, Delaware – A girl was bitten by a Delaware virus in Delaware, confirmed the CDC last week.
According to a statement released on April 19, the girl was injured in July 2018 while she was watching television in her room.
The family contacted the Delaware Public Health Division and the Delaware Department of Agriculture to get help in identifying the virus.
According to the CDC, the house where the girl was bitten was an older house located in a heavily wooded area. A window air conditioner was located in the bedroom where the bite had occurred.
In April 2019, the insect had previously been identified as an Embracing Bug, or Triatoma sanguisuga.
According to the CDC, kissing insects are blood-sucking insects that feed on animals and humans. Their nickname comes from their tendency to bite their face.
CNN has reported that insects, frequently found around Arizona, spread Chagas disease, which can lead to death.
"Anyone who is stung by these insects must be very aware of the symptoms of the flu, high fevers, swelling of the eyes," said Dawn Gouge, an entomologist at the University of Arizona.
The CDC estimates there are 300,000 cases of Chagas in the United States, most of them in other countries. But the family of the girl who mocked did not travel recently outside the country, the statement said.
According to the World Health Organization, more than six million people would be infected worldwide.
The CDC provided the following tips to avoid parasites:
People can prevent kisses from kissing by placing outdoor lights away from homes such as houses, kennels and poultry houses and turning off unused lights. Homeowners must also remove the piles of trash, wood and rock from the house and clean the bird and animal nests of the house.
Cracks and gaps should be inspected and sealed, and chimney flues should be tight when not in use.
