Lansing – General Motors Co. plans to invest $ 36 million in its Lansing Delta Township assembly plant to fund the production of popular crossover vehicles.

GM is currently building Chevrolet Traverses and Buick Enclaves at the plant.

A little over a month ago, the automaker announced that it would spend $ 22 million at its Spring Hill, Tennessee plant, to build new engines there. The investment in the plant comes as the automaker in Detroit plans to decommission four US plants where it builds less popular vehicles this year, potentially closing them permanently.

"We are proud of the hard work and commitment of the entire Lansing team," said Mary Barra, President and CEO of GM, in a statement. "This investment will allow us to prepare the plant for future cross production."

Lansing Delta is GM's newest factory in the United States. The automaker has announced that it has built 2 million crossovers on its site since 2006.
