‘Godzilla vs Kong’ release date changes again

“Godzilla vs. Kong” is on the move – once again.

Shortly after Warner Bros. pushed back the film’s release date two months earlier than expected, from May 21 to March 26, the studio postponed its national premiere for a week. Now, “Godzilla vs. Kong” will debut on March 31 simultaneously in theaters and on the HBO Max streaming service. The monster mash-up will launch internationally, where HBO Max is not available, before North America on March 26.

As part of the schedule announcement, Warner Bros. added James Wan’s horror film “Malignant” to the schedule, setting the thriller for September 10th.

The latest delay for “Godzilla vs. Kong” was made in response to news that MGM was postponing the James Bond sequel “No Time to Die” from April 2 to October 8. Sony’s “Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway”, which was also set for April 2, has been postponed until June. With most of the films leaving release dates in early 2021, “Godzilla vs. Kong” will open the Wednesday before Universal’s action thriller “Nobody” starring Bob Odenkirk.

Legendary Entertainment, the production company behind “Godzilla vs. Kong”, recently got closer to Warner Bros. after threatening to take legal action over the studio’s decision to send all of its 2021 films to the HBO Max streaming service on the same day they debut in theaters. Legendary was frustrated because Warner Bros., his frequent collaborator, previously blocked Netflix’s $ 250 million offer to buy the monster movie. The two companies reportedly allayed the frustrations and agreed on a publishing strategy that worked for both sides.

Adam Wingard directed “Godzilla vs Kong”, the fourth installment in Legendary’s monster universe after “Godzilla”, “Kong: Skull Island” and “Godzilla: King of the Monsters”. Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein wrote the screenplay. The upcoming crossover event – starring Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall, and Brian Tyree Henry – will pit giants from another world against each other in an epic battle.
