Google adds guitar tuner to search

Smartphones have made tuning your guitar easier than ever. These days all you have to do is find a decent tuning app or ask Google Assistant to tune your instrument. Now Google has made the process even more painless by throwing a chromatic tuner directly into search. The tech giant said Android Police that it has just rolled out the new search functionality, available on just about any device.

Unlike the Assistant feature which needs, well, a device that can access the voice assistant, you can invoke this tuner just by making a query in Search on mobile or desktop. Just type “google tuner” to see it right at the top of the results page. Of course, the device you are using must have a working microphone in order to hear your instrument, and you will need to allow the function to access it.

According to Android Police, its effectiveness depends on the microphone of your device. Some devices may need you to play loud or really, really close to them, and smartphones may perform better than computers for this particular purpose. After running it, the tuner will let you know if your instrument is tuned or if you need to tune it using a visual indicator. This built-in Google tuner joins other music-related features in the tech giant’s search engine, including “Hum to Search,” which can help you identify songs that come to mind.
