Despite the many leaks, there is still quite a bit of stuff we don’t know about the upcoming Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. The latest Google Camera update offers an overview of the Pixel 6 series specs including screen resolution, flash for the selfie camera, and more.
About APK Insight: In this “APK Insight” article, we’ve decompiled the latest version of an app that Google downloaded from the Play Store. When we decompile these files (called APKs, in the case of Android apps), we can see different lines of code in this clue about possible future functionality. Keep in mind that Google may or may not offer these features, and our interpretation of what they are may be flawed. However, we will try to allow those that are about to be completed to show you what they will look like if they are shipped. With that in mind, read on.
Pixel 6 Camera Info
Earlier this year, we reported based on the Google Camera app that the Pixel 6 will adopt a centered punch hole for the selfie camera, a detail that has since been proven by renderings of the phone. With Google Camera 8.3, rolled out now as part of Android 12 Beta 3, we know more about the Pixel 6 series cameras.
Screen resolution
First, in the code that manages the location of the front camera in relation to your screen, we see that the Pixel 6’s selfie camera should be located 540 pixels from the left edge. Meanwhile, the Pixel 6 Pro – or Pixel 6 XL, depending on who you ask – will have its front camera positioned 722 pixels from the left.
If we assume that these selfie cameras will be placed in the center of the phone, we can assume that the resolution of the Pixel 6 should be 1080p, while the Pixel 6 Pro should have a resolution slightly higher than 1440p.

As for the perforations themselves, we previously reported that the Pixel 6 will have a slightly smaller hole for the selfie camera – 55 pixels in diameter, compared to 65 on the Pixel 5. With this latest update from Google Camera, we find that the Pixel 6 Pro will actually have a bigger hole in the screen for the selfie camera – 70 pixels in diameter, compared to 65.
4K selfie videos
Digging deeper into why the selfie camera cutout is larger, we find that the Pixel 6 Pro has a special “p21_front_setup” feature that is not enabled for the smaller Pixel 6. Based on this, we were able to confirm that only the Pixel 6 Pro will be able to record selfie videos in 4K, a feature that we have already discussed.
Front flash?
Elsewhere in Pixel 6 series features, there’s evidence that Google could add a front-facing LED flash. Currently, Google Camera is able to give you beige flash effect by brightening the screen. Instead, the Pixel 6 is gearing up for a “head torch,” which we think could be a suitable flash for your selfie camera.
While a built-in selfie light is almost unheard of on Android – aside from a few quirky phones like the BLU VIVO XL4 – it might make a lot of sense to some, given the popularity of selfie light accessories.
Improved video zoom
Another detail we found out about the Pixel 6 series is that it will offer up to 7x zoom when recording videos, even when recording at 60 frames per second. For comparison, last year’s Pixel 5 only offers 3x zoom at 60 fps and 5x zoom at 30 fps.
5x Ultra-telephoto?
As stated at XDA through cstark27, there are also mentions in Google Camera to an “ultratel” camera that should offer 5x telephoto zoom to an upcoming Pixel phone. While recent renderings indicated that the Pixel 6 Pro had three rear camera sensors, we haven’t been able to permanently connect that “ultral” 5x zoom to a particular phone.
No super resolution zoom?
Oddly, “SABRE_ALLOWED” is turned off, which means the signature Pixel Super Res Zoom series – which uses machine learning to fill in details in photos like you have a telephoto lens – may not be enabled on the Pixel 6. In a way, that might make sense, as the Pixel 6 series is currently supposed to offer a major camera hardware upgrade, including the aforementioned “ultral” sensor.
That said, we do find a variety of other machine learning related features enabled for the Pixel 6, so it’s possible that “Saber” will simply be replaced with a newer version of Super Res Zoom.
