At the I / O 2019 last week, Google announced a handful of new smart display features and the Nest Max Hub. In the past few days, the devices in the wizard have seen additional clocks and a new Routines shortcut. Google is currently deploying a new Smart Display User Interface with an improved home screen.
This new home screen was introduced for the first time at Nest Hub Max last week, but is being rolled out on the Nest Hub. The default / idle status of smart displays is and remains the ambient setting in mode / photo.
Once users have typed and interacted with the device, they are redirected to the home screen cards for YouTube, Google News, audio controls, and so on. The background was usually bright white, while the left side indicated the time / date and the weather with three-day forecasts.
The new Smart Display Home Screen replaces the initial bright screen background with anything that is in your ambient mode. At first touch, the current photo or clock becomes blurred and becomes the background when you swipe the first card. Once you have penetrated deeper into the carousel, the white background comes back.
This results in a weaker interface, while this initial map is no longer displayed on a similar white background. However, this change seems less awesome when fuzzy dials become the wallpaper.
In addition, dedicated weather forecasts have been removed. The time / date are larger and moved to the lower left corner, while the weather is limited to an icon, temperature and up / down. The detailed forecast has disappeared, but users can press the icon to load a result in full screen. For some users, this is an unfortunate change that adds an extra step to a common action.
Overall, this new Smart Display user interface makes the assistant assistant more personal by replacing the generic background. It also helps to prepare Nest Hub Max, where Google with Face Match wants to show users active reminders or Duo messages on the home screen.
This new design is extended to many, but not all Nest Hubs that we checked this morning. It is probably linked to the latest firmware of Google Home (version 1.39154941) of Monday. Third-party smart monitors from Lenovo and JBL should attend this redesign given the usual level of feature parity.
