Google Fi is rolling out new family features at no extra cost – blocking unknown contacts, budgeting for data, and more.

To help you and your family stay safe while on vacation, Google is rolling out a handful of new features for its phone subscription service. These new “ family features ” will automatically be included in all Fi plans at no additional cost. You’ll start seeing them in your Google Fi app next week, so keep an eye out!

The first feature is welcome: block calls and texts from strangers. Activating this new setting will ensure that only numbers in your child’s contact book can call or text them. They can still make outgoing calls or texts to anyone and anyone they contact can respond to them for 30 days. “Block calls from strangers” is bypassed for 48 hours if 911 is dialed so that the first responder can call back in an emergency.

Then you can now create a data budget for your children’s devices. If you are on the flexible plan, it might help you and your family set a limit on the amount of data used each month. After your child has used up their data budget, their data access is slowed down, not stopped. In the Fi app, you can set it up to be alerted when your kid is approaching their data limit or even slow down their data earlier.

Finally, it’s now easier than ever to set up Family Link for kids through the Fi app on their Android device. You can set up content rating restrictions for the Play Store, limit screen time, and manage app downloads too! Google had tunnel vision last year to make their apps and services more user-friendly and as a dad I couldn’t be happier. We use Family Link and Google Fi at home. If you want to add more family members to your Fi plan, be aware that this decreases the rate per person in your group.
