Google plans to release a version of Chrome that will work natively on Apple’s new Macs with Arm-based processors on Wednesday, according to to Mark Chang, a Chrome product manager. Google actually started rolling out the new version on Tuesday, but halted the rollout because that version may have crashed unexpectedly.
In theory, a native version of the notoriously resource-intensive browser could run more efficiently on Apple’s Arm computers. In our reviews of the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini with the new M1 chip, however, we found that the version of Chrome designed for Intel chips already performed well on Apple’s newer Macs, so hopefully this native version works even better. .
When the update is available, you can choose which version of Chrome to download from the browser’s website, according to Elvin Hu, an interaction designer on the Chrome team:
Parker Ortolani, an employee of BuzzFeed, said his version updated Chrome from emulated x86 version to native Apple silicon version today, but now Ortolani says his Chrome version has reverted to x86 version.
Google began rolling out a new version of Chrome on Tuesday, touting Chrome’s “biggest performance boost in years” thanks to a few changes under the hood. The company’s blog on the new version didn’t mention anything about a version optimized for Macs based on Apple’s Arm.
