Following today’s launch of Macs equipped with M1 technology, Google quietly released a Mac version of Chrome optimized for Apple Silicon.
Update 18/11: The Apple Silicon version of Chrome for Mac is now available for download. As of this morning, M1 devices with the Intel variant of the browser are not yet automatically updated. Therefore, an uninstallation is necessary to get the optimized version immediately.
To download, visit google.com/chrome and click the blue “Download” button. If you are using an M1 computer, you should have the option of choosing between “Mac with Intel chip” – which is labeled as “most popular” – and “Mac with Apple chip”.
This change to the installer page has not yet been fully rolled out to all new MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac Mini devices. The new download prompt is shown below.
Update 17/11: Google has withdrawn the optimized Apple Silicon version of Chrome due to “unexpected crashes”. Users who were able to install are advised to follow this workaround to resolve the issue:
- Open System Preferences.
- Go to Security and privacy.
- At the top, select Privacy.
- On the left, select Bluetooth.
- Under your approved apps, select add app (+).
- Select Google Chrome.
- Restart Chrome.
An alternative is to uninstall the new version and download the standard Intel variant until an update is released.
The Intel / x86 version already works thanks to Rosetta 2, but there should be further optimizations in this update for the new processor.
Meanwhile, some users report that the Intel version of Chrome for Mac is automatic update to the Apple Silicon variant. Since the last version of Chrome launched later this afternoon, some new Mac owners have already downloaded the previous version this morning. You can visit chrome: // settings / help to manually start the update process.
This Apple Silicon support is being rolled out with Chrome 87, which features many other performance improvements. Namely, up to a 5x reduction in CPU usage and a 1.25 hour increase in battery life due to the limitation of background tabs. Google browser opens 25% faster, while page loads also see speed improvements.
The latest version also includes an app icon optimized for macOS 11 Big Sur. The Chrome logo is placed on a white, rounded square background that better matches the latest design direction of the operating system. It also corresponds to the Chrome icon for iOS.
