In announcing the big UI overhaul for smart assistants last October, Google also announced the addition of Sunrise alarms. This Android feature is now starting to roll out as part of a new alarm experience for the Nest Hub.
Today, “Ok Google, show me my alarms” or by swiping up from the bottom of a Nest Hub and tapping the alarm icon, a carousel appears in which each alarm is placed side by side. rib in a circle. There is an FAB in the lower left corner to create a new one.
The new user interface uses a list with the time, date and the on / off button on each line. Pressing ‘Set Alarm’ will take you to the same dropdown selector as before, but there is now a second step to determine if it repeats, set the sound, activate the Sunrise alarm or the morning routine:
- Repeat: Select Sunday – Saturday.
- Alarm ringing: 20 in total grouped by Light, Medium, Heavy and Natural with the ability to preview each.
- Sunrise alarm: As on the Pixel Stand and later on all phones with the Google clock installed, “the screen will slowly light up like a sunrise to gently wake you up”. You can then specify whether the lights in the room should also “come on to wake you up gently” or have a “pre-alarm” – “soothing sound that goes off when the sunrise alarm goes off”. The last customization allows you to determine the playing time of the effects: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 minutes.
- Morning routine: Can be triggered automatically after canceling your alarm.
During this time, the main list also gives you access to “Default alarm settings”. There is an alarm volume slider and the additional possibility to choose the duration “Silence after” and “Duration of snooze”.
Google first tested this new Smart Display experience in September for a limited number of users. As of today, Nest Hubs – standard, not Max – on version 1.52 of the preview channel (Home app> Device settings> Device info> Preview schedule) can access to the new experience of alarms.
This is a complete upgrade that matches the broader interface redesign to bring more controls to the device. Given the current availability of the preview, we hope that the launch will be wider in the coming weeks for all smart displays.
