GOP Representative Madison Cawthorn Calls North Carolina School District Mask Mandate “Child Psychological Abuse”

North Carolina GOP Representative Madison Cawthorn spoke out against a school mask warrant at a boarding school meeting on Thursday, equating it with child abuse.

Cawthorn was among those who came forward to protest the Buncombe County School Board’s decision to put in place a mask requirement for the next school year. The measure, passed Thursday morning in a 4-2 vote, stipulates that all K-12 staff and students must wear face coverings indoors, WLOS 13 notes.

The congressman told school officials they had “muzzled” children and the voices of parents opposed to the mandate, many of whom were present at the meeting. The mask’s mandate is “nothing less than psychological abuse of children,” he added, telling school board members they should be ashamed of themselves, WLOS reporter says 13.

Protesters who joined Cawthorn in condemning the warrant asked council to vote on measure; however, the board did not.

Cawthorn has been a vocal opponent of mask mandates, recently joining nearly 40 House Republicans who protested the President-backed House requirement Nancy PelosiNancy PelosiLiz Cheney Says Father “Deeply Distressed” by Republican Party Status 19 House Democrats Call on Capitol Hill Doctor to Mandate Vaccines Ohio Special Election: A Good Day For Democrats MORE (California) and other Democrats.
