PORTLAND – Gordon Munson, 85, of Ellicott Road, Portland, NY, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehab Facility in Dunkirk, NY from prolonged illness.
Gordon was born August 17, 1936 in Dunkirk, NY, the son of the late Kenneth and Helen (Salhoff) Munson.
He attended Brocton Central School, then served his country in the armed forces during the Korean conflict.
He was a 35-year veteran of the fire service as a member of the Portland Volunteer Fire Department and had also served as the Fire Chief there.
He had been a member of Hose 1 and Hose 4 Drum and Bugle Corps in Dunkirk, NY, and was a former member of the Barbershoppers and Barbershop Quartet.
Gordon was employed by the Greater Buffalo Press, Don Frame Trucking, and retired from the New York State Thruway Authority after 25 years of service. He was a longtime parishioner of the Portland Congregational Church in Portland, NY
On April 25, 1975 Gordon married Beverly “Peg” Munson and married 46 years.
Gordon is survived by his beloved wife and children: Cynthia Munson-Lillie and Mark Munson; her loving stepchildren: Dave Lillie, Chuck Lillie and Verona Boardman
In addition to his parents, Gordon was predeceased by his sister, Ruth Battagl. No prior visit will be observed. Gordon graciously donated his body to the Anatomical Donation Program at the University of Buffalo. A memorial service with burial will be announced at a later date.
