SALT LAKE CITY – The number of COVID-19 cases in Utah increased by 646 on Thursday, with 23 additional deaths and 34,290 vaccinations reported, according to the Utah Department of Health.
Fifteen of the deaths occurred before Feb.11, but are still under investigation by state medical examiners, according to the health department. Thursday’s death toll puts Utah above 2,000 deaths since the start of the pandemic, with a total of 2,015 deaths reported on Thursday.
The sliding average number of positive cases per day over seven days is now 524, according to the health department. The positive test rate per day for this period of time reported with the “people over people” method is now 8.4%. The positive test rate per day averaged over seven days calculated with the “test-by-test” method is now 4%.
There are now 167 COVID-19 patients currently hospitalized in Utah, according to state data. A total of 936,681 vaccines have been administered in the state, up from 902,391 on Wednesday.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox also provides an update on the COVID-19 pandemic at a press conference Thursday morning.
The event started at 11 a.m. and is televised live here. Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson and Utah Department of Health state epidemiologist Dr. Angela Dunn are expected to join Cox at the press conference.
