MADISON, WI – Governor Tony Evers on Thursday declared Children's Mental Health Awareness Day in Wisconsin.

During the proclamation, Evers highlighted parts of its budget that will cover more services for children.

At the event, Abbi Hicks, a mental health advocate, shared her story with lawmakers. She said she fought against anxiety, self-destructive behavior, borderline personality disorder, and so on. Finally, she found a support system that helped her overcome these challenges.

"It is important to keep in mind that children are not defined by their mental health needs – they are primarily humans," said Hicks. "Knowing that there is even a hint of hope can help keep people alive and thrive."

Hicks is currently studying Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She has Spanish Studies for Minors and Studies for Children and Adolescents.
