A private pharmacy responsible for immunizing approximately 25,000 North Carolina residents during the pandemic received a visit from the governor today.
Not only did Steve Adkins and his team of nearly 200 Health Park Pharmacy volunteers vaccinate tens of thousands of residents against COVID – they also gave Governor Cooper his 2021 flu shot.
Cooper got the flu shot to remind others to do the same. After all, even during the pandemic, flu season is still a concern. No one wants to deal with both the flu and COVID, which medical officials say could increase long-term effects on organ systems and could be more harmful to the lungs.
Cooper recognized Adkins on Friday for the work his pharmacy has done to ensure people have access to free and effective COVID vaccines.
“Very early on in the process, they were all involved in administering COVID vaccines,” Cooper said.
Photos from the start of the pandemic showed lines of hundreds of people wrapping around the pharmacy building.
His team also visited the community, vaccinating people at such a rapid rate that at one point, the County Durham Public Health Department asked him how this was possible.
“It wasn’t easy to reach that number, but that’s what we focused on – serving our community and giving back,” said Adkins.
Adkins and his team also administer flu shots. Health officials say it is safe to get the flu shot and the COVID vaccine at the same time.
