TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Governor Laura Kelly has announced the official phased vaccine deployment plan for the state of Kansas.
Governor Laura Kelly said that between Monday, January 4 and Wednesday, January 6, the state reported 5,501 new cases of COVID-19 and 130 new deaths. She said that brought Kansas’ total to 236,818 positive cases of the virus, 7,113 virus-related hospitalizations and 3,027 virus-related deaths.
According to Governor Kelly, the state has also surpassed its goal of testing 1 million Kansans by the end of 2020. She said the official tally of tests carried out on Kansans from the start of the pandemic to the end of 2020. 2020 was 1,001,000. Governor Kelly said there was a gap between the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s immunization tracking and that of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. She said her team is working closely with the CDC to close this gap. She said the KDHE uses KS WebIZ to track the state’s immunization progress. She said as of 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan.6, the state had administered 45,872 doses of the vaccine. She said residents can go to kansasvaccine.gov for more information about the vaccine in the state.
According to Governor Kelly, Kansas received 17,550 doses of the Pfizer vaccine for the week of Jan. 4, she said the state also received the second dose of the initial 24,000 doses. She said the state received 16,900 doses during that week. She said Kansas is expected to receive 17,500 doses of the Pfizer vaccine during the week of Jan. 11 and 17,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine.
According to Governor Kelly, his team has prepared their official phased plan for the deployment of the COVID-19 vaccine for the state, which is as follows:
- Phase 1 – Residents of long-term care facilities, healthcare workers, workers essential to the continuity of the response to COVID-19
- Phase 2 – Residents 65 years of age and older, those who work in approved assembly places such as correctional facilities and homeless shelters, and critical high-contact workers who work with many contacts who may be exposed to the virus
- Phase 3 – Residents aged 16 to 64 with serious health conditions increasing the risk of serious illness with COVID-19, non-health workers and critical infrastructure workers who cannot work remotely
- Phase 4 – Residents aged 16 to 64 with other health conditions that increase the risk of serious illness with COVID-19
- Phase 5 – Each resident over 16 years of age
Governor Kelly said Phase 1 is expected to be completed by the end of January.
According to Governor Kelly, the phased plan was created using advice from national and national health experts. She said the state will continue to make decisions based on what doctors, scientists and public health experts say. She said the timeline for the remainder of the vaccine rollout depends on when and how many doses the state receives from the federal government. She said it’s important to keep in mind that while there will be more people eligible for the vaccine in each phase, there will also be more health care providers administering the vaccine in each phase.
Governor Kelly said her health salute for the week of January 4 went to Leslie Pfannenstiel, the Norton County health administrator. She said the Pfannanstiel team consists of only seven members. She said Pfannenstiel is also helping facilities suffering from epidemics and has provided social and financial services to residents in quarantine.
