HONOLULU (KITV) – Governor David Ige asks tourists to stay away from Hawaii.

It comes after the number of active COVID-19 cases in Hawaii soared to more than 9,300 infections on Monday.

“Now is not the right time to travel to the islands. The capacity of the restaurant was restricted. Access to rental cars is limited… and we know that visitors who choose to come to the islands won’t have the type of typical vacation they expect when they visit Hawaii, ”said Ige .

The governor’s request came during a press conference held in his office. Ige says he has met with officials from the airline and says the executives will help amplify his message to passengers.

“I am fully aware that the airlines continue to struggle. There was a general understanding of the health care situation in our islands. It was recognized that this was a difficult time in the state and they expressed that it would help them in any way they could. “
