Darien, CT (October 3, 2021) – The 2021 Viper 640 North American Women’s Championship was won by Grace Howie with crew Meredith Killion, Cardwell Potts and Ted Ferrarone, posting the top four scores in the six-race series. After holding the lead with four races yesterday, Howie’s team netted a one-two today for a dominant effort in the 18-boat fleet.
Today’s winds were lighter, offering 5 to 6 knots from the southwest, and as a third race was attempted, a significant change in the wind and conditions which upset the fleet led to her abandonment.
The key for many teams, however, was to reach race six by allowing a takedown. This was notably the case of Cam Farrah (Ft. Walton, FL) sailing with his father Cliff and Jackson Benvenutti. On day one, Cam posted a score of 8-1-1 12, with the 12th resulting from an OCS start. Showing a 2-1 performance today and dropping 12th place, Cam and his team moved up from fifth to second overall.
The final podium was won by Sarah Warren (Pawcatuck, CT) sailing with Hanna King, Mark Zagol and Tim Desmond.
Howie, who had never been in a Viper before the event, benefited from having Potts and Ferrarone sailing together for almost a decade. “We had really good wind speed, especially when we were in the lead and could focus on the straight line speed.
“Being a four-man made us heavier than many boats and allowed the boat to be put more under pressure by pushing down, bowing down and going fast. Once you got on the long side it was a drag race to the mark, and we seemed to have better boat speed than the other boats.
The context for this first Viper 640 Women’s North Americans began two years ago, initially to be a global event in 2020 but postponed and converted to a continental championship due to COVID-19 international travel restrictions.
From the start, it was recognized that it would be difficult to field a large fleet of all-female Vipers, as only a handful of Vipers are owned and regularly helmed by women. As a result, the rules allow a mixed crew as long as the helm was female, and most boats consist of at least half of women or predominantly female teams, and there was an all-female team.
The race took place on October 2-3, 2021.
