Leadership advancing socially engaged research (LASER), a values and ethics-based leadership program managed by the High school at the University of Notre Dame, received the Outstanding Program Awards from the Association of Leadership Educators at its 2021 annual conference.
Noting the clear links between LASER and Notre Dame’s mission to be a force for good in the world, Laura Carlson, Vice President, Associate Rector and Dean of the Graduate School, described the impact of the award on the students who participated in the program. “We are deeply honored to receive this recognition, ”said Carlson.
“LASER’s success is directly linked to the special gifts of graduate student researchers and academics who put their minds and hearts into the program every year. A central element of LASER is a student-led community engagement project. Our general message to Notre Dame graduate students is that “Your research matters”. Through the program, each participant creates a clear path between their intellectual endeavors and the positive impact they can have as individuals, ”continued Carlson.
“The main goal of LASER is for participants to gain a better understanding of themselves, others and the organizations in which they serve, and then to apply their training in a manner informed by the core values of the University. integrity, responsibility, teamwork, leadership in mission and leadership in excellence ”, explained John lubker, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs of the Graduate School.
Linking the curriculum to the historic strengths of Notre Dame, Lubker observed, “These hybrid and experience-based classroom opportunities serve as a forum for learning and gaining experience in self-awareness, communication skills and management of people and projects. “
Originally funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation in 2015, LASER is a one-year selective after-school program offered annually to Notre Dame doctoral students in third and fourth year and delivered through workshops, guest lecturers and mentoring experiences. that complement individual projects. . A space for interdisciplinary dialogue and learning – participants represented 25 Notre Dame doctoral study programs – these students draw on multiple perspectives on leadership and the ethical implications of their work.
