ESCANABA – The Delta Solid Waste Management Authority (DSWMA) received a grant from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) to improve recycling and enable residents of Delta County to recycle more materials. The grant is $ 600,000 and DSWMA is required to spend matching funds of $ 164,016. for a total of $ 764,016.

DSWMA board members say they are making an effort. Cheryl Ohman, executive director of Lakestate Industries, also said she supports the effort.

“Lakestate Industries has played a pivotal role in the recycling process for nearly 30 years in Delta County, and we will continue to help with the new improved process and look forward to the new partnership with Marquette County Solid Waste Management Authority,” she said.

The plan is for regional cooperation between DSWMA and Marquette County Solid Waste Management Authority (MCSWMA). Both will collect the recycled materials and then DSWMA will transport them to MCSWMA for final processing. DSWMA will continue to process metal and corrugated cardboard recycling loads at Escanaba. The main expenses of the plan will include the purchase of two transport trailers, a semi-tractor to pull the trailers, modifications to the recycling conveyor and an electronic machine to locate metal objects in the recycling stream.
