The opening of the new interconnection was welcomed by the European Commission, which supported the project, through the intermediary of the Commissioner for Regional Policy, Korina Kretsu. The interconnection of the Cyclades with the continental power grid has been co-financed by the EU. for the period 2007-2013. The benefits of this interconnection are estimated at around 80 million euros per year, which will be reflected in consumer accounts, the Commission emphasizes in its communication, stressing that the islands will go through the production of electricity with obsolete diesel generators natural gas, which is a more environmentally friendly source of energy.

The project continues and, once completed, 13 Cycladic islands will be connected to the continent, notes the Commission. or

Last week, IDMH announced the launch of the second phase of a budget of 70 million euros, including the interconnections of Naxos with Paros and Mykonos, as well as the modernization Andros cable connections with South Evia and Tinos

The second phase is expected to be completed in the second half of 2019 and will follow phase c, which involves the installation of a second submarine cable between Lavrion and Syros and which, according to the decision of the ADMHI, was reduced by two to be completed in 2020 instead of 2022.

The fourth and final stage of the Cycladic interconnection, including the western and southern Cycladic islands, has been included in the decennial development program for the period 2019-2028

The interconnection phase of the Cyclades consists of the Greek cables Fulgor, Prysmian and NARI, which have been selected through international competition procedures onal. In particular, the Hellenic Cables SA – Fulgor SA consortium undertook the construction of the submarine cables that will connect Naxos to Paros and Mykonos. Prysmian has been entrusted with the modernization of existing cable interconnections Livadi (Euboea) – Andros and Andros – Tinos. Finally, NARI Group Corporation has been retained as contractor for the construction of a 150 KV substation in Naxos. The second phase of the Cyclades Interconnection closes the loop between Paros, Naxos and Mykonos and protects the reliability and stability of the islands electricity supply, provided that dual supply is ensured, greatly reducing their dependence autonomous power plants. The schedule provides for the completion of the project in the second half of 2019.
