Gregory Sierra, best known for his roles as Sgt. Miguel “Chano” Amanguale on Barney miller and Julio Fuentes on Sanford and sons, died at the age of 83.

Sierra died of cancer on Jan.4, a family spokesperson confirmed with our sister site Deadline, but news of her death did not become public until Friday. If he had lived, Sierra would have been 84 on January 25.

A veteran New York actor of Puerto Rican descent, Sierra has often broken racial barriers and defied stereotypes by portraying a number of high-ranking police and district attorney types on everything from Hill Street Blues at Miami Vice. He played an FBI agent on Falcon crest and the police captains on the original MacGyver and the shortest There is something there.

Sierra also had a knack for comedic timing, and in addition to his recurring role as Fred Sanford’s sarcastic neighbor Julio, he loved small but notable roles in Growing pains, The prince of Bel-Air, Soap and It’s a life. Its unique appearance on All in the family saw him play a Jewish extremist named Paul Benjamin, who unexpectedly befriends Archie Bunker, but later dies in a car bomb. Instead of applause from the audience, the episode ended in grim silence.

Sierra was a resident of Laguna Woods, California, and is survived by his wife, Helene.
