A deputy with the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department was said to have been in “good spirits” Thursday after a bulletproof vest stopped several bullets fired at him in a chase that turned into a shootout, authorities said.

At approximately 5:10 p.m., the deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop near the town of Mazon, but the driver in question refused to stop and led the deputy in a pursuit.

After jumping out of his vehicle, the deputy chased the suspect for several blocks, said Grundy County Sheriff Ken Briley. At one point, the deputy came “an arm’s length or two” away from the suspect. Moments later, the individual turned with a handgun, shot the deputy, hitting him three times, police said.

The deputy sustained a gunshot wound to his forearm, which resulted in muscle injuries. He received a second bullet in the chest and a third in the back, but the bullets were stopped by his bulletproof vest, authorities said.

The deputy would be in “very good shape” Thursday evening.

“We’re very, very lucky that the ballistic vest stopped those two bullets,” Briley said.

The suspect was apprehended following a standoff at an apartment complex, authorities said. He informed negotiators that he had been shot, but authorities said it was not immediately clear whether the deputy opened fire.

The investigation into the shooting is being conducted by the Illinois State Police.
