A suspected gunman was in custody and is expected to be charged later today following a shooting in an alleyway on the 900 block of Almond Street just before 10 a.m. on Monday, city police confirmed .
No one was injured, police said.
At least three neighbors reported to the Sun-Gazette that they heard a first shot, a brief pause, a second shot, another pause followed by several shots in rapid succession.
“It seemed to me that he (the shooter) was emptying the magazine” said a neighbor, who heard the gunshots from his veranda.
“He waved his arm and threw the gun into the yard (after the shooting). He then picked it up. said another neighbor. This neighbor added that the whole incident was filmed by his surveillance camera.
A third neighbor was so angry with the gunfire that he confronted the shooter as he walked up the alley towards him.
“I started yelling at him. But what are you doing?” He told me that someone was threatening his girlfriend. I told him “Dude, I don’t care. You could have shot a child. You don’t shoot people. There are children everywhere here, “ said the neighbor.
None of the neighbors wanted to be identified by name.
“The guy then asked me ‘Can you get rid of the gun?’ I told him, “No i don’t play this game“Said the neighbor, adding”he claimed he was ‘protecting’ his girlfriend.
Another neighbor said “When he started shooting, the girlfriend came out of the house crying hysterically.”
The gunman, wearing a blue hoodie, ran inside a house and then emerged shirtless, neighbors said. City police rushed to the scene and took the man into custody after a very brief chase.
Police recovered between five and seven cartridge cases in Menne Alley, just west of Almond Street.
The Sun-Gazette will have more information on these developing stories as details become available.
