The Pirates signed right-handed Keury Mella to a minor league contract, reports Jake Crouse of MLB.com (Twitter link). He was assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis. Mella was released by the Diamondbacks last week.
Mella has seen action in the big leagues in each of the past five seasons, but never carved out a cohesive role on the staff. He’s never recorded more than ten MLB innings in any given campaign, and his overall work consists of 28 2/3 of 7.22 ERA / 5.11 SIERA balls. The 28-year-old has made two appearances for the D-Backs this season, allowing six runs in 1 2/3 of an inning before going through outright waivers.
During parts of four Triple-A campaigns, Mella worked at a 4.55 ERA in 201 2/3 innings, starting just over half of her appearances. However, he has worked exclusively in relief this season, throwing 29 innings of 4.34 balls ERA in a hitting-friendly environment in Reno. Mella’s strikeout rate of 22.7% is a little below average, but he’s done well at avoiding walks and inducing goals on nearly half the balls in play against him.
In other news from the Pirates roster, the club activated the left-hander Steven brault from the list of injured after 60 days, as indicated above. He worked four one-run innings against the Brewers this afternoon in his season debut. To create a 40-player space, Pittsburgh transferred the right Chase De Jong from the list of wounded from 10 days to that of 60 days. De Jong is out for the season after undergoing left knee surgery last week.
