This can be a confusing and frustrating challenge for many Houstonians trying to register for the COVID-19 vaccine in Harris County.
But now there is a new plan to streamline the registration process. Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo announced that ‘Ready Harris’, a new ‘smart waitlist portal’, will be launched Tuesday afternoon to ensure this is a process fair to anyone struggling to make an appointment for vaccination.

“First off, let me tell you a little bit about our values in Harris County when it comes to vaccine distribution,” Hidalgo said at a news conference Monday. “Let me put it bluntly. Hidalgo said all eligible Harris County residents can get on the waiting list and then be contacted once vaccine supply and appointment times are available. The process will no longer be implemented on a first come, first served basis, according to a press release from Harris County Health. Hidalgo stressed that the process must be fair for working families.
“In everything we do to fight COVID-19, we are pushing not only for efficiency, but also for justice and fairness,” Hidalgo said at the press conference.
Currently, only Phases 1A and 1B are eligible for COVID-19 vaccinations, which include people 65 years of age and older, healthcare professionals, and people 16 years of age or older with certain medical conditions. If you fall into these categories, your entry will be weighted according to priority and then randomized to the priority list.
Hidalgo stressed that those who did not have internet access could still register for a vaccination. Residents of Harris County without internet access can call the Ready Harris phone number (832-927-8787) once the portal goes live Tuesday afternoon in order to be put on the waiting list.
The Harris County Health Department also plans to launch a COVID-19 vaccine data center that will show vaccine availability and distribution, according to a press release.
